Ruixing Active Chinese Centre has run primary Chinese composition classes in Singapore since 2012, from our Bugis centre (116 Middle Road, #05-04 ICB Enterprise House), about five minutes' walk from Bugis MRT. All teachers are university graduates with at least six years of local teaching experience and teach bilingually.
This differs from many centres: composition is a separate class, not folded into the regular Chinese lesson. The reason is practical — composition needs writing in class, correction in class, then rewriting. That cycle does not fit inside a lesson that also has to cover vocabulary and comprehension. Primary and secondary each run their own.
Regular Chinese lessons do include composition technique. If your child needs only general practice, primary Chinese tuition is enough; the composition class is for those who need concentrated work.
The phrases that work in composition also work in the oral exam, and the "give a reason, give an example" skill practised for the oral is exactly the hardest part of composition. We deliberately connect the two in class.
Physical group classes take a maximum of six students; online group classes on Zoom take up to 20. One-to-one is available. Composition fees match the equivalent year group in primary Chinese:
| Year | Group (4 lessons/month, 2 hours each) |
|---|---|
| P1–P2 | S$268/month |
| P3–P4 | S$288/month |
| P5–P6 | S$318/month |
| One-to-one | S$488/month (S$60/hour) |
Materials included. A one-time registration fee of S$20 applies, plus a S$100 deposit refunded in full on one month's notice. Full rates: pricing.
Can we try a lesson first?
Yes. Group trials are free; a one-to-one trial is S$30 for two hours. Book a trial.
My child's vocabulary is weak — composition first, or Chinese first?
Chinese first, usually. Eight times out of ten a child cannot write not because they lack technique but because they have no words to hand. Build vocabulary first and composition progresses far faster.
