Singapore Goes Satellite: What ERP 2’s New Road Markings Mean — A Chinese Reading Lesson
On 28 September 2026, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority announced that from 1 January 2027, Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) will switch to satellite-based technology, so physical charging gantries are no longer needed. All Singapore-registered motor vehicles must be fitted with the ERP 2 on-board unit, and more than 98% of eligible vehicles already have one.
This lesson rewrites the announcement as a short Chinese reading passage for HSK 4–5 learners. The passage has six paragraphs and is about 900 characters long. You will meet useful transport-and-technology news vocabulary such as 路标 (road sign), 卫星 (satellite), 过渡 (transition), 逐步 (step by step), 拆除 (to remove) and 执法 (law enforcement), and learn how the new blue oval ERP road markings work and when the 95 gantries will be modified or removed.
Each of the eight key words comes with pinyin, an English gloss, a Chinese explanation and an example sentence, all with audio. Seven quiz questions with explanations check your understanding, and the whole passage can be played in a female or male voice at three speeds. It suits secondary school students and adult learners.
